Summer semester 2027: what closes on 15 January, and what to do now

What the summer intake actually is

The summer semester (Sommersemester) starts in March or April. It is the smaller of Germany's two intakes and it is frequently written off by application advice aimed at the winter round — which is exactly why it is worth your attention. Fewer programs also means fewer applicants per place, and a summer start costs you six months instead of a full year if the winter round did not go your way.

In our catalogue 736 programs accept a summer-semester start, and 157 of them close applications on 15 January 2027.

Who the summer round suits

It suits three kinds of applicant particularly well.

• —Anyone who missed 15 July and does not want to lose a year waiting for the next winter round.
• —Applicants whose documents were not ready in the summer — an APS certificate that came through late, a degree certificate still in issue, a language test retaken in the autumn.
• —People switching subject or country, where the extra months between decision and start are useful rather than wasted.

The December work that decides January

Counting backwards from 15 January, the parts that are not under your control need to be in motion by early December at the latest.

Uni-Assist, which processes applications for a large share of German universities, needs documents to ARRIVE before the deadline, not be posted before it, and it charges per application. Certified translations take one to three weeks. Degree recognition through anabin is a lookup, but if your institution is not listed it becomes a case, and cases take longer. Where your country requires an APS certificate, that is the long pole and it should already be running.

The blocked account is the part people leave last and it is the easiest to do early — the current proof-of-funds figure is about €11,904 for a year, and several providers open an account within days. Doing it in December rather than February is what makes a spring visa appointment possible.

If January is not reachable

That is a real answer and it is better arrived at in October than in January with a fee spent. Two things are worth doing instead.

First, shortlist the rolling-admission programs, which do not care about the date at all. Second, aim at 15 July 2027 for the winter round and use the extra six months on the parts that genuinely improve an application: the language, the documents, and a shortlist of four to six programs rather than one.
