🇮🇳
Germany loves India.
Indian students are Germany's largest international group — and the fastest growing. The path is well-trodden: English-taught engineering and IT master's, tuition-free public universities, and a job market that actively recruits Indian graduates.

The Indian route to Germany runs through engineering. TU9 universities and Fachhochschulen alike are full of graduates of Indian B.Tech programs doing English-taught master's in CS, data science, mechatronics, and automotive engineering — then converting Werkstudent roles at Bosch, SAP, Siemens, or the Mittelstand into full-time offers.
What makes the corridor work: no tuition at most public universities, a transparent APS process (annoying but predictable), and one of Europe's most established Indian professional communities to land into.
A Indian Germany already exists.
You're not the first — landing into a living community is a practical advantage, not a nice-to-have.
Where Indians cluster
Berlin, Munich, and Frankfurt have the biggest Indian professional communities; Aachen, Stuttgart, and Karlsruhe the densest student ones. Every TU has an Indian student association running Diwali, cricket, and airport-pickup threads.
Food & daily life
Indian groceries exist in every university city (Frankfurt and Berlin especially); Hindu temples and gurdwaras operate in the major metros. The homesickness curve is real but well-cushioned.
Professional networks
GIST (German-Indian associations), university alumni chapters, and very active LinkedIn/WhatsApp corridors — most newcomers find their first WG and first job lead through them.
The India checklist, in order
- 01
APS first, always
The APS India certificate is mandatory before your visa appointment (₹18,000, several weeks). Start it at aps-india.de the day you decide on Germany. If your degree is in Engineering, Commerce/Business, or Finance/Economics and you're targeting summer semester 2027+, APS is also adding a new dMAT test step — see the APS timeline guide.
- 02
Blocked account early
About €11,904/year (verify current figure). Fintiba/Expatrio open online in days; fund it via a low-fee transfer and keep receipts.
- 03
uni-assist for most applications
~€75 first application. VPD (preliminary review) can take weeks in peak season — front-load it.
- 04
English test, not German
IELTS 6.0–6.5 typical for English-taught programs; some accept MOI letters. The program page decides.
- 05
Book the visa slot immediately
Delhi/Mumbai/Chennai queues move; book the day the admission letter lands.
Deep-dives: the 10-step relocation course, blocked account, finding a room, student jobs, what's actually tuition-free, the student visa checklist, the APS certificate timeline.
What it costs from India
- Tuition: €0 at most public universities (semester fee €150–€400 includes transport); private €5,000–€20,000/yr.
- Blocked account: ~€11,904/yr (mid-2026 — verify). APS: ₹18,000. uni-assist: ~€75.
- Monthly life: €850–€1,200 depending on city (Munich highest).
- Werkstudent income: €14–€18/hr — most Indian students substantially self-finance from semester 2.

Questions students from India ask
Is Germany better than the US/Canada for Indian students right now?
The numbers have moved sharply in Germany's favor: US F-1 visa rejection rates for Indian applicants hit roughly 61% in 2025, up from about 36% in 2023, while Germany approves an estimated 90-95% of complete applications and can process a visa in as few as six days (figures reported mid-2026 — verify current rates with the mission). Add near-zero tuition and an 18-month post-study job-seeker permit, and for engineering/IT profiles the value case is currently hard to beat.
Can I bring my spouse?
Family reunification exists with fund/housing requirements and is a separate application — most students bring partners after settling in. Verify current rules with the mission.
Do German companies really hire Indian graduates?
Yes — engineering and IT employers hire international graduates of German universities at scale, typically from their own Werkstudent pools. B1 German dramatically widens the funnel.
What if I miss the January window?
Rolling-admission private programs still start year-round, and the winter intake opens applications in spring. Use the board's 'Apply anytime' section.
