← All countries for Chinese studentsGermany loves China.
China is Germany's second-largest international source country — about 38,600 Chinese students in winter semester 2024/25 (DAAD/DZHW "Wissenschaft weltoffen" figures), just behind India. The corridor is mature, not new: tuition-free public universities, deep research ties, and a well-worn path through engineering, business and data-science master's — with one extra step most other corridors on this site don't have, the APS certificate.

China's corridor to Germany is one of the oldest and largest on this site: DAAD/DZHW's "Wissenschaft weltoffen" count puts roughly 38,600 Chinese students in Germany in winter semester 2024/25 — second only to India's ~58,800, and down a modest ~7% from WS 2019/20 rather than still climbing. It is a mature, settled pipeline, not a new or fast-growing one — the opposite shape from the newer corridors on this site (Pakistan, Nepal, Cameroon).
The one real procedural difference from Cameroon, Ghana or Nigeria: China is on Germany's APS list, alongside India and Vietnam. Every Chinese applicant needs an Academic Evaluation Centre (APS) certificate from aps.org.cn before a visa application can even be submitted — notarized transcripts, your Gaokao score, and (for most applicants) a compulsory 15–20 minute interview in English or German about your coursework. Budget ¥2,500 (~€320, verify) and 4–6 weeks; start it the day you decide on Germany, not after your admission letter arrives.
A Chinese Germany already exists.
You're not the first — landing into a living community is a practical advantage, not a nice-to-have.
Where Chinese students cluster
Berlin, Munich, Aachen, and Stuttgart carry the largest Chinese student populations, tracking the TU9 engineering universities; most have an active Chinese Studierendenverein (CSSA) running arrival-week meetups, textbook exchanges, and Lunar New Year events.
A long academic relationship
German-Chinese university partnerships are decades old and dense — joint degree programs, DAAD-funded exchange agreements, and Confucius Institutes on several campuses — so professors and international offices are generally well used to Chinese applicants' paperwork.
Where the visa actually gets filed
Unlike single-mission corridors (Cameroon routes everyone through Yaoundé), China has four: the Embassy in Beijing plus Consulates General in Shanghai (covering Shanghai/Anhui/Jiangsu/Zhejiang), Guangzhou (Guangdong/Guangxi/Fujian/Hainan) and Chengdu (Sichuan/Guizhou/Yunnan/Chongqing) — file at the mission for your home region, not whichever is most convenient.
The China checklist, in order
- 01
APS first, always
The APS China certificate (aps.org.cn, administered in Beijing) is mandatory before any visa application — without it, the mission won't process your case even with an admission letter in hand. Notarized transcripts, your Gaokao score, and usually a compulsory interview; budget ¥2,500 (~€320, verify) and 4–6 weeks. Start this before you even finish applying to programs.
- 02
File at the right mission
Beijing (embassy) or the Consulate General in Shanghai, Guangzhou or Chengdu — each covers a fixed set of provinces. Confirm which one covers your residence before booking an appointment; applying at the wrong one gets you turned away.
- 03
Blocked account early
About €11,904/year (2026 figure — verify the current one). Fintiba/Expatrio open online in days; fund it via a documented transfer and keep every receipt.
- 04
uni-assist for most applications
~€75 first application. VPD (preliminary review) can take weeks in peak season — start it as soon as your APS interview is scheduled, not after it clears.
- 05
English test, not German
IELTS 6.0–6.5 typical for English-taught programs; the program page decides whether a medium-of-instruction letter is accepted instead.
Deep-dives: the 10-step relocation course, blocked account, finding a room, student jobs, what's actually tuition-free, the student visa checklist.
What it costs from China
- Tuition: €0 at most public universities (semester fee €150–€400 includes transport); private €5,000–€20,000/yr.
- Blocked account: ~€11,904/yr (2026 figure — verify). APS: ¥2,500 (~€320, verify). uni-assist: ~€75.
- Monthly life: €800–€1,200 depending on city (Munich highest, eastern cities cheapest).
- Werkstudent income: €14–€18/hr — most students substantially self-finance from semester 2.

Questions students from China ask
Do Chinese applicants need an APS certificate?
Yes — China is on Germany's APS list along with India and Vietnam. The certificate comes from aps.org.cn (administered in Beijing), needs notarized transcripts plus your Gaokao score, and usually a compulsory interview. Budget ¥2,500 (~€320, verify) and 4–6 weeks, and start it before you finish applying to programs — no APS, no visa, regardless of your admission letter.
Is China still the largest source of international students in Germany?
No — India overtook China a few years ago. DAAD/DZHW's winter semester 2024/25 count has India at roughly 58,800 and China second at roughly 38,600, itself down about 7% from WS 2019/20. China's corridor is large and mature, not the fastest-growing one on this site.
Which German mission handles my Chinese student visa?
Whichever covers your home region: the Embassy in Beijing, or the Consulates General in Shanghai (Shanghai/Anhui/Jiangsu/Zhejiang), Guangzhou (Guangdong/Guangxi/Fujian/Hainan) or Chengdu (Sichuan/Guizhou/Yunnan/Chongqing). Verify the exact jurisdiction before booking — the wrong mission won't take your application.
Why do Chinese visa applications get refused, honestly?
Document consistency and unclear financing dominate, same as every corridor on this site — not grades or potential. An APS certificate that matches your actual transcripts and a correctly funded blocked account address both. Nobody can guarantee a visa; anyone who promises one is selling you something.
