Ghanaian enrollment in Germany has grown fast — roughly 1,814 students in 2020/21 to about 3,208 in 2024/25, a 77% rise in four years (Destatis/DAAD figures, verify the latest release). Like Pakistan, Ghanaian applicants skip the separate APS academic-credential interview: WAEC certificates and attested university transcripts take its place, alongside the same zero-tuition public universities and English-taught engineering and IT master's that draw every corridor on this site.

Ghana's route to Germany tracks the other West African corridor on this site, Nigeria: zero-tuition public universities, English-taught engineering, IT and data-science master's, and a market that already knows how to hire international TU9/Fachhochschule graduates. Growth has been fast and recent — Destatis/DAAD counts put Ghanaian enrollment at roughly 3,208 for 2024/25, up from about 1,814 four years earlier.
What's different from India or Vietnam: Germany's mission in Accra doesn't run the separate APS academic-credential interview, so Ghanaian applicants don't sit that extra step. The document check happens through uni-assist and the embassy instead — WAEC (BECE/WASSCE) certificates and university transcripts, properly certified and attested, are what actually move an application, not which city you apply from. The Accra mission also requires an in-person visa appointment with no walk-ins, and has discontinued its own translation/legalization desk, so arrange certified translations independently ahead of time.
A Ghanaian Germany already exists.
You're not the first — landing into a living community is a practical advantage, not a nice-to-have.
Where Ghanaians cluster
Berlin carries the largest Ghanaian community in Germany; Munich, Hamburg, Stuttgart, Düsseldorf and Aachen all have active Ghanaian associations under the umbrella Union of Ghanaian Associations in Germany (UGAG, est. 2004). NUGSA (National Union of Ghana Students Germany) is the recognized student body, and Munich runs an annual Ghana Cultural Festival.
Faith & food
Ghanaian and West African churches and grocery stores operate in Berlin, Hamburg and the Ruhr cities; church congregations are often the first landing point for new arrivals, well ahead of any official university support.
Shared ground with Nigeria
The practical playbook — document attestation instead of APS, the blocked account, Werkstudent-to-full-time conversion — mirrors the Nigeria corridor closely enough that West African student WhatsApp groups often cover both.
The Ghana checklist, in order
- 01
No APS — but document attestation still matters
Ghana is not on Germany's APS list (that applies to China, India, Vietnam and Mongolia), so there's no separate academic-credential interview before your visa appointment — verify with the embassy, as rules can change. Your WAEC certificates and university transcripts are checked through uni-assist and the mission instead; get them properly certified and attested before you apply.
- 02
Blocked account early
About €11,904/year (2026 figure — verify the current one). Fintiba/Expatrio open online in days; fund it via a documented transfer and keep every receipt.
- 03
uni-assist for most applications
~€75 first application. VPD (preliminary review) can take weeks in peak season — start it as soon as transcripts are certified.
- 04
English test, not German
IELTS 6.0–6.5 typical for English-taught programs; the program page decides whether a medium-of-instruction letter is accepted instead.
- 05
Book the visa slot early, documents ready
The German Embassy in Accra requires an in-person appointment — no walk-ins, and its own translation/legalization desk has been discontinued. Book the day your admission letter lands with a complete, consistent, independently-translated document set.

Questions students from Ghana ask
Do Ghanaian applicants need an APS certificate?
No — Ghana is not on Germany's APS list (that applies mainly to China, India, Vietnam and Mongolia). Ghanaian applicants submit WAEC certificates and attested university transcripts through uni-assist and the embassy instead, and rules can change, so verify the current list with the mission before you apply.
How fast is the Ghana–Germany corridor growing?
Fast: Destatis/DAAD figures show Ghanaian enrollment in Germany rising from roughly 1,814 in 2020/21 to about 3,208 in 2024/25 — a 77% increase in four years (verify the latest Wissenschaft weltoffen release for the current count).
Why do Ghanaian visa applications get refused, honestly?
Document consistency and unclear financing dominate, the same two causes behind refusals from every corridor on this site — not grades or potential. A genuine, properly attested file plus a correctly funded blocked account addresses both. Nobody can guarantee a visa; anyone who promises one is selling you something.
Can I bring my spouse?
Family reunification exists with fund and housing requirements, filed separately — most students settle in first. Verify current rules with the mission.
