Studying in Ireland from India: the New Delhi visa office route

What is different from India

One visa office handles India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and the Maldives

The Embassy of Ireland's New Delhi Visa Office processes study visa applications from residents of India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and the Maldives who hold an unconditional offer. Applicants create the application on the AVATS online system, print and sign it, arrange a VFS appointment where applicable, and submit documents. VFS submission is currently available only to residents of India or Nepal. Source

You can apply up to five months before the course starts

The information note says you can submit a visa application five months before the course start date and should apply once you have an unconditional placement offer and supporting documents. A VFS appointment and document transit can take several days. Source

Published study visa decision time is 4 to 8 weeks

As of the page's update on 17 September 2026, the New Delhi office lists 4 to 8 weeks for a first-instance study decision, counted in working days from receipt at the Embassy. Applications submitted less than 3 weeks before the course start cannot be guaranteed a decision. Biometric clearance is required for applicants in India, and the office may phone applicants or sponsors to check an application. Source

Funds: 10,000 euros a year on top of fees

Irish immigration states visa-required students must show immediate access to at least 10,000 euros for a one-year course and ready access to the same level of finances for each later year, in addition to course fees. Check the Irish immigration page for the current amount. Source

The New Delhi note lists what financial evidence is and is not accepted

It asks for six months of personal and sponsor bank statements (ideally salary accounts) and verifiable income tax return acknowledgments. It says it does not accept volatile market-linked funds such as crypto, stocks, shares or mutual funds, nor gold valuations or chit funds. Gold must be liquidated into a bank account or converted to a gold loan, large deposits must be fully explained in the Financial Summary Form, and spreading funds across many sponsors and holdings raises refusal risk. Education loans need more than the sanction letter

For a student loan, the New Delhi note says you must submit the original sanction letter plus supporting documentation; the sanction letter alone is not sufficient. If property guarantees the loan, its deeds must be submitted, and the guarantor counts as a sponsor who must be declared. Education bonds such as EduBond are accepted if the source of the money used to buy them is accounted for. Source

Fees, English test and other mandatory documents

If your fees are 6,000 euros or less you must pay them in full before applying; if more, at least 6,000 euros. An approved English language test is compulsory for all student visas, and failure to submit one results in refusal. Qualifications from India should be provided as originals and DigiLocker versions where applicable, and previous visa refusals must be disclosed. Source

Graduates may stay under the Third Level Graduate Scheme

The New Delhi note says the Third Level Graduate Scheme permits some graduates to work in Ireland for up to two years in some cases without an employment permit. Eligibility depends on the level of the qualification, so check Irish immigration guidance. Source

Your steps, in order

  1. Get an unconditional offer letter from an Irish provider and note the course fee and when it must be paid.
  2. Decide your fee payment: in full if 6,000 euros or less, otherwise at least 6,000 euros before applying.
  3. Book an approved English test, since the visa office requires one for all student visas.
  4. Assemble six months of bank statements for yourself and any sponsor, income tax return acknowledgments and the Financial Summary Form.
  5. Prepare qualifications as originals and DigiLocker copies, a statement of purpose, medical insurance and police clearance.
  6. Create the AVATS application, print and sign it, book VFS and submit; apply up to five months ahead and at least three weeks before the course start.
  7. Keep your phone available in case the visa office calls to check your application.
