← All countries for Nepali students

Germany loves Nepal.

Germany is not yet Nepali students' first choice — DAAD ranks it sixth, behind Australia, India, the US, Cyprus and South Korea — but it is the only one of those with zero tuition and no APS certificate step. For an engineering or science bachelor's or master's, that combination is hard to beat once you know it's there.

Nepal isn't on the well-trodden India/Vietnam/Nigeria path to Germany yet — DAAD's own country data puts Germany sixth among destinations Nepali students actually choose. But the two things that make those corridors work (zero public-university tuition, a real post-study work permit) apply just as much to a Nepali passport, and one step that slows India and China down doesn't apply here at all: Nepal is not an APS country, so there is no mandatory academic credential interview to schedule before you can even book your visa appointment.

Among Nepali students DAAD already funds, engineering is the single largest field of study — ahead of agriculture/forestry, law/economics/social sciences and the natural sciences combined, in DAAD's 2023 breakdown. That matches the same TU9/Fachhochschule route that works for Indian and Vietnamese applicants: an English-taught master's in engineering, data science or a related field, into a Werkstudent role, into a full-time offer.

A Nepali Germany already exists.

You're not the first — landing into a living community is a practical advantage, not a nice-to-have.

Where Nepalis cluster

Berlin, Munich, Frankfurt, and Stuttgart have the largest Nepali communities; it's a smaller, less visible diaspora than India's or Vietnam's, but active — NRN (Non-Resident Nepali) chapters and city-level Nepali Samaj associations run newcomer orientation and Dashain/Tihar celebrations.

Student networks

The Nepalese Students Society in Germany and university-level Nepali student associations are the first stop for housing leads and course advice; NEGAAS (Nepal German Academic Association), DAAD's own alumni network in Nepal, connects returnees with current students.

Smaller means more personal

With a thinner community than the biggest corridors, word of mouth matters more — a handful of active WhatsApp/Facebook groups per city carry most of the practical knowledge. Join one before you fly.

The Nepal checklist, in order

  1. 01

No APS — but keep the same rigor

Germany's Kathmandu embassy does not require an APS certificate for Nepali school or university qualifications (only Chinese and Indian degrees need one). You still submit full academic records — transcripts, degree certificates, mark-sheets — and they're checked just as closely.

  2. 02

    Blocked account early

About €11,904/year (2026 figure — verify the current one). Fintiba/Expatrio open online in days; fund it via a documented transfer and keep every receipt.

  3. 03

    uni-assist for most applications

~€75 first application. VPD (preliminary review) can take weeks in peak season — start it as soon as you have transcripts ready.

  4. 04

    English test, not German

IELTS 6.0–6.5 typical for English-taught programs; a few accept a medium-of-instruction letter instead. The program page decides.

  5. 05

Book the visa slot at the embassy in Kathmandu early

Appointment availability moves with the season — book the day your admission letter lands, and bring a complete, consistent document set.

What it costs from Nepal

  • Tuition: €0 at most public universities (semester fee €150–€400 includes transport); private €5,000–€20,000/yr.
  • Blocked account: ~€11,904/yr (2026 figure — verify). uni-assist: ~€75.
  • Monthly life: €800–€1,200 depending on city (Munich highest, eastern cities cheapest).
  • Werkstudent income: €14–€18/hr — most students substantially self-finance from semester 2.

Indicative figures, checked 11 October 2026 — verify amounts with the German mission in Nepaland each university's official page.

Questions students from Nepal ask

Do Nepali applicants need an APS certificate?

No. Germany's embassy in Kathmandu requires the APS academic-credential check only for Chinese and Indian qualifications. Nepali applicants still submit full, verifiable academic records, but skip that extra step and its weeks of waiting.

Is Germany actually a common choice for Nepali students?

Not yet the most common — DAAD's own data ranks it sixth behind Australia, India, the US, Cyprus and South Korea. It's a real and growing corridor, not an established one like India's or Vietnam's, so expect a thinner (but active) community to land into.

What do Nepali students in Germany actually study?

Engineering is the largest single field among DAAD-funded Nepali students (2023 data), ahead of agriculture/forestry/ecology and law/economics/social sciences — the same English-taught master's route that works for other corridors on this site.

Can I bring my spouse?

Family reunification exists with fund and housing requirements, filed separately — most students settle in first. Verify current rules with the mission in Kathmandu.
