What is different from Nigeria

You apply in person in Abuja or Lagos, with biometrics

The VFS page for Nigeria says visa applications must be submitted in person at the Ireland Visa Application Centre in Abuja or Lagos, with a prior appointment, and that every applicant is expected to attend because biometrics are taken as part of the process. Source

The online form (AVATS) expires after 30 days, and appointments are hard to change

VFS Nigeria states that the online AVATS form is valid for only 30 days from the day you fill it in. If you cannot submit within that time you need a new online application. It also says an appointment cannot be cancelled and can be rescheduled only once, so line up your documents before you start the form. Source

Long-stay applicants need a passport valid for at least a year

VFS Nigeria says travel documents should be valid for a minimum of one year from the intended date of arrival in Ireland for a long-stay visa. Check your passport expiry before you book anything. Source

Payments are made in Naira, in two places

VFS Nigeria says its service charge (listed at Naira 104,849 when we checked) is paid by card when you book the online appointment, while the visa fee is paid at the application centre in Naira by POS, QR or cash. It adds that service fees can change with the exchange rate, so look at the page again before you book. Source

Allow about eight weeks, and apply up to three months ahead

The Irish Immigration Service says applicants can expect a decision within approximately 8 weeks of the application being received, and that you should apply for a long-term study visa up to 3 months before you travel. The Abuja visa section, via VFS, advises applying at least eight weeks before departure with all supporting documents included. Source

Your original documents come back to you by prepaid envelope

The Irish Embassy page for Abuja says you submit originals together with photocopies, that the decision and original documents are returned to you, and that you must hand in a prepaid envelope, which you can get at the VFS office. Source

A Nigerian HND is placed at Irish Level 7 by NARIC Ireland

NARIC Ireland (hosted by QQI) describes the Nigerian Higher National Diploma as a 2-year award that follows the National Diploma, and compares it to an Ordinary Bachelor Degree at Level 7 of the Irish National Framework of Qualifications. The record was first published in October 2014, and each university still decides on its own admission requirements. Source

NECO and WAEC results are accepted at some Irish technological universities

An ApplyBoard guide for Nigerian students says several institutions in Ireland's technological university sector accept NECO results, with a C6 in English Language commonly required, and that some Irish institutions may also ask for a WES credential evaluation. Requirements differ by course, so confirm with the admissions office. Source

Your steps, in order

  1. Get your offer and confirm with the Irish college what fees must be paid before the visa application.
  2. Ask the admissions office whether your WAEC or NECO results, or your HND, meet the entry requirement for the course.
  3. Check that your passport is valid for at least one year after your planned arrival date.
  4. Fill in the AVATS online form only when your documents are ready, because it expires after 30 days.
  5. Book the VFS appointment in Abuja or Lagos and plan to attend in person for biometrics.
  6. Prepare Naira payments (service charge online, visa fee at the centre) and a prepaid return envelope.
  7. Apply up to 3 months before travel and allow at least 8 weeks for a decision.
