The APS certificate timeline: when to start for your deadline

What APS actually is

APS (Akademische Prüfstelle — 'academic evaluation centre') is a document-verification unit attached to German missions. It checks that your certificates and transcripts are genuine before you can complete a German university application or book a visa appointment — and its certificate, once issued, covers your applications, not just one.

It's mandatory for applicants from India and Vietnam (the two APS-relevant corridors in UniChapter's data; China is also an APS country outside our current coverage). Nigeria and Bangladesh are not currently APS countries — verify current requirements at your German mission before assuming either way, as the list has changed before.

How long each stage really takes

The paperwork itself is fast; the appointment backlog is what actually determines your timeline.

• —India (aps-india.de): gather notarized document copies (~1–2 weeks) → submit + pay the fee (₹18,000, mid-2026 — verify) → wait for an interview slot, the real bottleneck, worse in Feb–Apr and Aug–Sep peak season → interview → certificate issuance, typically a few weeks after.
• —Vietnam (APS Hanoi/HCMC): interview rounds run on a published schedule rather than on-demand booking, so the constraint is catching the next scheduled round, not queueing — fee ~US$250 (mid-2026 — verify). Book the earliest round you can once you've decided on Germany.
• —Total, start to certificate: commonly 6–12 weeks outside peak season, longer inside it. Nobody controls the appointment backlog — the only lever you control is starting early.

Backward-planning from your deadline

UniChapter's board runs on Germany's two real deadline clusters: 15 January (summer-semester intake — see the early-2027 board) and 15 July (winter-semester intake — see the September-2027 board). Work backward from whichever one you're targeting.

• —Targeting the 15 January deadline: start APS by August–September the year before. That gives 4–5 months of runway even if you hit peak-season delays.
• —Targeting the 15 July deadline: start APS by February–March the same year — same 4–5 month buffer, shifted six months.
• —Rolling-admission programs: APS still gates your visa appointment regardless of when the university admits you, so don't let a flexible program deadline talk you into starting APS late.

The certificate is reusable — treat it as a one-time hurdle

Once issued, your APS certificate covers multiple university applications and stays valid for your applications going forward. The strategy that works: get it done early and independently of any single university's admission decision, so it's never the thing standing between an offer and your visa appointment.

New for India: the dMAT, summer semester 2027 onward

APS India is adding a Digital Master Test (dMAT) to its documentation for Master's applicants whose previous degree is in Engineering, Commerce/Accounting/Finance/Economics, or Business/Management — exactly the fields most UniChapter India-corridor applicants are coming from. It applies to applications for the summer semester 2027 intake and later; it does not replace APS document verification itself.

You're exempt if you completed APS online registration, or shipped complete APS documents, or already hold your APS certificate — all before 29 June 2026 (mid-2026 — verify against aps-india.de, as these dates were current as of publication). If you registered for APS after that date and your degree is in one of the affected fields, budget for the dMAT as an extra step, not a replacement one.

Published schedule (verify current dates at aps-india.de/dmat before relying on them): registration opened 29 June 2026, registration deadline 15 September 2026, test date 26 September 2026, certificates available online from 12 October 2026. If you're targeting summer semester 2027 and haven't already registered for APS, the registration deadline is close — check it now rather than after you've picked a program.

The dMAT costs an extra €150, paid separately from the €225 APS fee — g.a.s.t. (not APS India) runs registration and payment, with payment details shown on the dMAT portal during enrollment. Budget for both fees if you're not exempt.
