Studying in Bavaria, Germany

Bayreuth

A small Franconian town with a campus university, a UNESCO opera house and forest on every side.

Bayreuth has about 73,000 people and one main university, built as a single campus where lectures, canteen, library and sports hall sit together. The old town with its baroque court buildings is the other half of your life. This is a small town, so do not expect big-city nightlife or a large home-country community on your doorstep. What you do get is a university that treats Africa as a main research theme, a town that hosts one of the world's best-known opera festivals every summer, and the hills of Upper Franconia for weekends.

Part 1

Living in Bayreuth

A court town, a composer and a campus

Bayreuth was first mentioned in 1194 and became a principality of its own in 1398. Its best-known period is the Golden Age between 1735 and 1763 under Margrave Frederick and Margravine Wilhelmine, who left the town its baroque theatre, palaces and parks. The town passed to Prussia in 1792 and to the Kingdom of Bavaria in 1810.

Richard Wagner settled here in 1872, and the Festspielhaus on the Green Hill opened in 1876 with the first Ring cycle. The festival still runs each summer, plays only Wagner, and the waiting list for tickets has been described as up to ten years. The town was heavily bombed in April 1945.

The university came much later. Bavaria's parliament decided to found it in 1971 and teaching began in 1975, which is why it is a compact campus university and not a set of buildings scattered through the old town. The semester ticket is part of the local tradition: Bayreuth was the first university town in Bavaria to introduce one, in August 1996.

What to see in your first months

Most of the town's big sights are baroque, and several are cheap or free to look at from outside. Check opening hours before you go, because the opera house can close for rehearsals.

  • Margravial Opera House (Markgräfliches Opernhaus) ↗

Built 1744 to 1748 and on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2012, described by the tourist office as the best-preserved freestanding baroque court theatre. Address Opernstraße 16. Entry is EUR 10, or EUR 9 reduced, and hours change by season.

  • Festspielhaus on the Green Hill ↗

Wagner's festival theatre, seating 1,937. Inside, you normally get in on a guided tour and only outside the festival season. The 2027 festival runs from 25 July to 24 August, and ticket requests for it could be sent between 28 August and 12 October 2026.

  • Eremitage ↗

An 18th-century park on the edge of town with the Old Palace (built 1715), an orangery, grottoes, a ruin theatre and the New Palace. The park is open every day; the water features run hourly from May to October. A 45-minute guided tour of the Old Palace and park costs EUR 4.50, or EUR 3.50 reduced.

  • Iwalewahaus ↗

The university's centre for contemporary African art, at Wölfelstraße 2 in the middle of town. It holds exhibitions, artist residencies, lectures, concerts and film nights, and a collection of modern and contemporary art from Africa, Asia and the Pacific.

  • Museums in town ↗

The tourist office lists the Richard Wagner Museum, the Franz Liszt Museum, the Jean-Paul Museum, the Kunstmuseum and the Historisches Museum.

Green space and weekends

In town, the Hofgarten behind the New Palace and the Röhrensee park are where people sit outside when the weather allows. The Eremitage is on the edge of town and has a lot of forest around it. The Lohengrin Therme, a spa, sits next to it.

Further out, the tourist office points to the Fichtelgebirge, the Fränkische Schweiz and the Frankenwald for day trips, and to hiking and cycling routes with maps on its own site. The Roter Main river runs through town. The International Club of the university also runs a historical city walk in English and an autumn hike every October, which is an easy way to see the surroundings with other newcomers.

These are the university's own approximate figures for students. Your rent depends on whether you get a dorm room; private rooms usually cost more.

Getting around and getting out

Bayreuth is small enough that most students bike or take the local bus. The Studierendenparlament has a working group for bicycle mobility that is building a community bike repair workshop, and the Margravial Opera House page lists bus lines 302, 304 and 307 to Luitpoldplatz in the centre.

For longer trips, Nuremberg Airport is about 85 km to the south. The student parliament also lists FlixBus among its student discounts.

Work and employers

The university's orientation week covers student jobs. Bayreuth also hosts research units of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, including the Center for High Temperature Materials and Design HTL, which develops high-temperature materials and processes for industry. For paid work on a student residence permit, the permit itself and the Ausländeramt set your limits, so ask there before you sign a contract.

  • Internationaler Club für die Universität Bayreuth ↗

  • Theater am Campus ↗

A student theatre working group of the Studierendenparlament.

Campus and study culture

Almost everything is on one campus: lecture halls, the Audimax (a 700-seat hall finished in 1994), the central library, the canteen and sports facilities. You will see the same people at lectures, in the canteen and at the sports hall, which makes it easy to build a circle in the first term. The Life Sciences faculty is the exception, because it sits in Kulmbach.

The student parliament has 113 student groups on its overview page, from the debating club and the university radio Schalltwerk to a law moot court, an AI association, Elefant Racing and groups such as Studieren ohne Grenzen and Amnesty. For a university of this size that is a lot, and it is where most student friendships start.

Finding a room

The university does not run dormitories and cannot find you a room. The Studierendenwerk Oberfranken runs seven dorms in Bayreuth, among them the International student residence, Kreuzstein, Von-Römer-Straße/Dammallee, Adolph Kolping, Student Village Birken, and Am Tappert I and II, and you apply online once you have your admission. The university advises securing a place as early as possible. Other providers in town have their own applications, and shared flats and small apartments are often posted on wg-gesucht.

The university puts a dorm room at about EUR 350 a month. Private rooms are usually dearer than dorm rooms.

Housing links

Food, sport and evenings

On campus, the Hauptmensa and the Frischraum are both at Universitätsstraße 30, and the Studierendenwerk also lists cafeterias and coffee bars. The student parliament's discount page names Cafe Louis, whose outdoor bar takes EUR 3 off cocktails and long drinks and EUR 2 off an Aperol Spritz if you show a student ID, and an organic grocery delivery with 10 percent off single orders.

For sport, the university programme is the cheapest way in, and the University Sports Club, rugby and lacrosse groups appear on the student groups list. In the evening, the KHG runs a bar evening on Tuesdays, ESN and the International Club run events, and a student group called Uni-Openair is on the official list.
