Studying in Hesse, Germany

Darmstadt

A compact science and engineering city south of Frankfurt, with a UNESCO art-nouveau hill, a space agency control room and a technical university where 28% of students are from abroad.

Darmstadt has about 168,000 people and has called itself the City of Science since 1997. The European Space Agency flies its satellites from here, the GSI heavy-ion laboratory discovered three chemical elements here, and TU Darmstadt, founded in 1877, has 24,437 students, 28% of them foreign. The city sits about 20 km from Frankfurt Airport and the Frankfurt job market. The Mathildenhöhe, a hilltop colony of artists and architects, became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2021, and a wedding tower from 1908 still marks the skyline. Choose Darmstadt if you want an engineering, computer science, natural science or architecture degree, a campus where many classmates are international, and a city that is quiet on weekdays and lively at its two big summer festivals. Do not choose it if you want a big-city nightlife scene every night: for that you take the train to Frankfurt.

Part 1

Living in Darmstadt

A city that makes science and art its trade

Darmstadt was chartered in 1330 and was for centuries the seat of the Landgraves and later Grand Dukes of Hesse. The polytechnic school that became TU Darmstadt opened in 1877, and around 1900 Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig invited artists and architects to a hill on the edge of town. That Artists' Colony on the Mathildenhöhe is why the city has so much Jugendstil, the German art nouveau. In 1912 a chemist at Merck, the pharmaceutical company that is still the city's largest employer, first synthesised MDMA here, a reminder that the industry side of the city is old too.

On the night of 11 to 12 September 1944 a British air raid started a firestorm that killed an estimated 11,000 to 12,500 people and destroyed more than three-quarters of the inner city. Because of that, the centre is mostly rebuilt, wide and practical rather than medieval. The old treasures are a few islands: the Schloss, the Mathildenhöhe, the Herrngarten park and the Prinz-Georgs-Garten.

Since 1997 the city has marketed itself as the Wissenschaftsstadt, the City of Science, and the label is not empty. ESA's mission control centre ESOC, EUMETSAT (the European weather-satellite agency) and the GSI heavy-ion research centre are all based here, and the FAIR accelerator is being built next to GSI. For a student that means lectures at TU Darmstadt can be followed by a thesis or an internship at a research centre a bus ride away.

What to see and do

Most of this is a walk or a short tram ride from the centre, and several places have reduced entry for students. The Darmstadt Card costs 10 EUR for one day and includes RMV buses and trams in zone 40 plus reduced admission at the places marked below.

  • Mathildenhöhe ↗

The artists' colony on the hill at Olbrichweg 15, on the UNESCO list since July 2021. The Hochzeitsturm (48.5 m, designed by Joseph Maria Olbrich, finished in 1908) and the golden-domed Russian Chapel stand on it, and the museum and exhibition building are open to visitors.

  • Residenzschloss ↗

The former residence of the Landgraves and Grand Dukes of Hesse in the middle of the city, with a museum on court life. The Wochenmarkt (weekly market) fills the square in front of it.

  • Hessisches Landesmuseum ↗

A large art and natural-history museum with Jugendstil, medieval art, a Joseph Beuys room (Block Beuys) and fossils from the Messel pit. The special exhibition Drachen (Dragons) runs from 2 October 2026 to 17 January 2027.

  • Staatstheater Darmstadt ↗

Opera, ballet, drama and musicals on three stages (Großes Haus, Kammerspiele, Kleines Haus). The theatre lists reductions for students.

  • Waldspirale ↗

The green, curved apartment block by Friedensreich Hundertwasser, built in the late 1990s. It is a home, so you look from the outside.

  • Naturbad Großer Woog ↗

The lake swimming area close to the centre, one of the places the Darmstadt Card gives a reduced price for.

  • ESA / ESOC ↗

Weekends, festivals and Frankfurt

Two festivals set the rhythm of the year. The Schlossgrabenfest over Pentecost is a music festival in the city centre: in 2026 it ran from 21 to 24 May, with over 60 bands, three stages and more than 100 food stalls, and the organisers counted about 150,000 visitors. The next one is 13 to 16 May 2027. The Heinerfest, a five-day fair in the city centre, had its 76th edition from 2 to 6 July 2026.

In winter there is the Weihnachtsmarkt (16 November to 23 December 2026), and in spring the Frühjahrsmess (16 to 25 April 2027). On the sports side, SV Darmstadt 98, the Lilien, play in the 2. Bundesliga at the Merck-Stadion am Böllenfalltor.

For anything bigger, Frankfurt is the answer. The Hauptbahnhof has ICE and regional services to Frankfurt, the S-Bahn runs from the station, and a direct bus goes to Frankfurt Airport. Because the Deutschland-Semesterticket is part of your semester contribution, those trips cost nothing extra on regional trains. Many students live in Darmstadt and go to Frankfurt for concerts, a bigger club scene, consulates and flights home.

Getting around

Darmstadt runs on trams, buses and bikes. Your semester contribution at both TU Darmstadt and Hochschule Darmstadt includes the nationwide Deutschland-Semesterticket (226.80 EUR of the winter 2026/27 fee), which covers local buses and trams in Darmstadt and regional trains across Germany. The contribution also includes a Call a Bike fee, and the AStA of h_da says its bike rental system, run with DB Connect, lets you ride for free for up to 60 minutes.

The campuses are in different parts of town. TU Darmstadt has its Stadtmitte and Lichtwiese campuses, and the Hochschule Darmstadt campus is at Schöfferstraße near the main station. Check that your room is on a tram or bike route to your campus before you sign the contract.

Jobs, internships and where graduates go

The Rhine-Main region is one of Germany's largest job markets, and Darmstadt has its own anchors. Merck, the pharmaceutical and chemicals company, is the city's largest employer, and Deutsche Telekom has a large presence. ESA's ESOC, EUMETSAT and GSI/FAIR employ engineers, physicists and computer scientists, and GSI lists offers for students, master's and doctoral theses and dual study programmes on its own site. Frankfurt, with its banks, consulting firms and tech companies, is a short train ride away.

IAESTE Darmstadt, a student group on the TU's list of initiatives, links to the international IAESTE internship network. The TU's International Student Services also run an international career counter, the Future Engineering Career Programme, on Wednesdays from 14:00 to 16:00. Non-EU students may only work limited hours, and the limit depends on your residence permit, so ask the International Office before you accept a job. Earnings up to 603 EUR a month are tax-free as a student job, according to Study in Germany.

Many of them take beginners, and these are where friendships outside your course start.

At the Hochschule Darmstadt the groups are smaller and more practical, with work in small teams and many thesis projects done with companies. The AStA of h_da lists student clubs, a student parliament of 25 members and a Studentische Vollversammlung (student assembly) on 25 November 2026.

If you start in winter, go to the Kick-Off Days of the TU's International Student Services in the first days: slides, a campus tour video and a Meet & Greet with TUtor International. Working next to your studies

Student jobs in Darmstadt run from tutoring and student-assistant (HiWi) positions at the university to jobs in the research centres and in Frankfurt. A HiWi position at a university needs at least six semesters of study according to Study in Germany. The hours non-EU students may work depend on your residence title and nationality, so check with the ISS or the h_da International Office before you sign. Breaking the rules can put your residence permit at risk.

Where you come from matters here
