Studying in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany

Essen

A former coal-and-steel capital that is now one of Germany's greenest big cities, in the middle of a metro region of about five million people.

Essen is where Krupp steel and Ruhr coal were made, and the city has spent thirty years turning that past into parks, museums and lakes. The Zollverein coal mine, closed in 1993, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Essen was European Green Capital in 2017. About 574,000 people live here, and the city sits inside the Ruhr, a chain of cities that run into each other, with some 5.3 million inhabitants. For a student that means two things: you study at the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE) or Folkwang in a city with real green space and cheaper rooms than Munich or Cologne, and a train ride gets you to Dortmund, Bochum, Düsseldorf and Cologne for your weekends, your football and your community.

Semester contribution (UDE, winter 2026/27)
367.80 EUR, including the Deutschlandsemesterticket
Blocked account for a student visa
11,904 EUR per year

Part 1

Living in Essen

A steel city that planted itself green

Friedrich Krupp founded Germany's first cast-steel factory in Essen in 1811, and the Krupp family has lived here since the 16th century. Krupp merged with Thyssen's steel business in 1999 and became thyssenkrupp. Coal mining went the other way: the Zollverein mine closed in 1993, and in 2001 it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You will not find the smoke any more. What is left is very large buildings, and the city has filled them with museums and a design school.

The greening is real, not only a slogan. Essen was European Green Capital in 2017, and about 9.2% of the city area is recreational green space, which Wikipedia describes as the greenest city in North Rhine-Westphalia. The Baldeneysee, a Ruhr reservoir, was built in 1931 to 1933 by unemployed miners, and is now where people run, row and walk on Sundays.

Be clear about what you are choosing. Essen is not a postcard old town. The centre around the main station is mostly post-war and a bit grey. The good parts are the south (Rüttenscheid, the Ruhr valley, the lake) and the old industrial sites. Students who want a compact campus town like Heidelberg will find Essen more spread out. Students who want rooms they can afford, a big region to explore and a university with many international students usually find it easier than the famous cities.

What to see and do, most of it free or cheap

Start with the places that make Essen different from other German cities.

  • Zollverein ↗

About 100 hectares of former mine and coking plant, with the Ruhr Museum, the Red Dot Design Museum, guided tours, restaurants and outdoor paths.

  • Grugapark ↗

A park of roughly sixty hectares with flower gardens and greenhouses, including a cloud-forest house and a cactus house. The winter season starts on 2 November 2026.

  • Baldeneysee ↗

The Ruhr lake in the south of the city, built by unemployed miners in the early 1930s. You can walk or cycle around it and the shore is where Essen goes for fresh air.

  • Villa Hügel ↗

The Krupp family villa above the Ruhr valley, shown in the photo at the top of this page.

  • Rüttenscheid ↗

The district south of the centre where students eat, drink and live. Rüttenscheider Straße is its main street (see the gallery).

One city among fifteen: the Ruhr as your weekend

The Ruhr is not one city, and it is not a collection of villages either. Essen, Dortmund, Bochum, Duisburg, Gelsenkirchen and others run into each other, and a regional train or tram takes you from one to the next in minutes, not hours. About 5.3 million people live in the area. For a student, that is the real size of the place: a concert in Bochum, a market in Duisburg, a Sunday service in Hamm or a consulate appointment in Düsseldorf are all day trips, and your ticket covers them (see the transport section).

Football is how many people here belong to the region. Rot-Weiss Essen play in the 3. Liga at the Stadion an der Hafenstraße; the club sells day tickets and season tickets through its online shop. Schalke in Gelsenkirchen and Borussia Dortmund are a short train ride away, and a match day in the Ruhr is a better introduction to local life than any guidebook.

For going outside, the Baldeneysee is the first stop, and the Ruhr valley gives you river paths on foot or bike. Winter is grey and often wet, and the city is quieter than it looks in summer photos. Plan an indoor life as well: the museums at Zollverein and the cafes of Rüttenscheid are where you will spend most of the winter evenings.

Getting around

The Deutschlandsemesterticket is built into your semester contribution at UDE, so there is no separate monthly purchase: it covers local and regional transport across Germany, not only Essen. It works in the Essen buses, trams and metro, and on regional trains to the other Ruhr cities and to Düsseldorf and Cologne. It does not cover fast ICE trains.

Düsseldorf Airport is about 30 km from Essen and has its own railway station. Most students from outside Europe arrive by plane, either here or via another big airport and a train. Allow time for the connection and do not book a tight transfer on your first arrival.

A second-hand bike is worth having for the lake and the river paths on weekends.

Where the big employers are

The Ruhr is where many German companies keep their head office, which matters for internships and a first graduate job. None of this is a promise of work.

  • Corporate headquarters in Essen ↗

The city article lists thyssenkrupp, RWE, Hochtief, Aldi Nord, Evonik Industries, Schenker and Deichmann among the companies based in Essen, and says Essen hosts eight of Germany's 100 largest listed companies. Most ask for German for office work.

Faith and community, all faiths

Essen has places of worship for most traditions, and the Ruhr fills the gaps. The Ruhr has communities from most traditions, and the nearest one is often one city over, so these are the places to start.

  • Essen Cathedral (Essener Dom / Münster) ↗

The seat of the Catholic bishop of Essen. The diocese publishes a cathedral and music programme, and in September 2026 it held an international youth Mass in the cathedral. Services are in German unless an event says otherwise.

  • ICF Essen ↗

A Christian community that calls itself open to everyone, with services every Sunday. Its page is in German.

  • English-Speaking Christian Congregation, Bochum ↗

The nearest English-language church is in Bochum, at the Pauluskirche. A 2017 report describes English worship with members from Africa, Asia and Europe.

  • African-led Pentecostal churches ↗

The Church of Pentecost, a Ghanaian-founded church, counts 108 local assemblies and about 10,000 members in Germany (end of 2024), with areas in Düsseldorf and Stuttgart. Its own site lists the assemblies near you.

  • Mosques in Essen ↗

A directory lists Alfaruq (Bersonstraße 11), the Bosnian mosque (Rahmstraße 253), Salâhu d-Dîn (II. Schnieringstraße 50), Abu Bakr (Altenessener Straße 521) and Fatih Camii (Schalker Straße 23-25). Each serves a different community, so visit and ask about language and times. UDE also has an Islamic students' association.

  • Gurdwaras in Essen ↗

Wikipedia's list of gurdwaras in Germany names two in Essen, Gurdwara Nanaksar and Gurudwara Dashmesh Darbar.

  • Sri Kamadchi Ampal Temple, Hamm-Uentrop ↗

A large Hindu temple in Hamm, in the eastern Ruhr, built under a Tamil priest from Sri Lanka and funded by donations and interest-free loans.

  • UDE religious student groups ↗

UDE's list of associations includes the Islamic Students' Association (ISB), a Christian student group (SMD), Alevi students and several Catholic student fraternities.

Honest cautions

Winters are mild but grey and wet, with an annual rainfall of around 930 mm, and the January average is 2.4 degrees; summers are warm, with a record of 40 degrees in July 2019. Bring a proper rain jacket and shoes that hold up on wet pavement.

Rents in the Ruhr are lower than in Munich or Frankfurt, but good rooms near the Essen campus go fast in September and March. Apply to the Studierendenwerk early and look for a WG at the same time. Do not pay a deposit to someone you have not met or to a listing that asks you to send money before a viewing.

Some districts in the north of the city are poorer and rougher than the south, and the Ruhr has real social differences. Ask older students which streets they avoid late at night. In an emergency the number is 112.

Your German matters more than the English course page suggests. A programme may be taught in English, but the immigration office, the bank, the landlord and the part-time employer mostly speak German.

Part 2

Student life in Essen

Where you can study

Student unions, services and groups

  • AStA of the University of Duisburg-Essen ↗

The student executive. It offers free legal and social counselling (tenancy, student finance), a service point, a laptop loan, bike rental and a bike workshop, the KulturTicket and a hardship application for the mobility fee. It also runs autonomous departments, including an international department, a department for students with a migration background, a queer department and a feminist department. Its Essen office is on the Essen campus.

  • Folkwang AStA ↗

The student committee of Folkwang. It deals with student-body issues and individual problems, and its student-affairs department helps with living and studying in Germany, finding accommodation and dealing with authorities.

  • Studierendenwerk Essen-Duisburg ↗

Serves UDE, Folkwang and Hochschule Ruhr West. Housing (over 2,000 places), canteens, BAföG, social and psychological counselling, two campus daycare centres for students with children, and a job portal. Housing office: Reckhammerweg 1, 45141 Essen.

  • Hochschulsport UDE ↗

Around 300 courses in more than 100 sports, booked through buchsys.de, with reduced fees for students. The Essen office is at Schützenbahn 70, and the USC Campus Essen gym is at the same address.

  • ISAAC, the International Student Activity and Assistance Club ↗

Student-run and aimed at intercultural exchange. An international Stammtisch twice a month on Thursday evenings, outings and hikes, a drop-in consultation, a buddy programme for exchange students and a language tandem. UDE and ISAAC won the Federal Foreign Office's AA-Preis on 28 November 2025. Contact: info@isaac-due.de, Instagram @isaac.unidue.

  • Sprachtandem UDE ↗

Pairs you with a native speaker of the language you are learning, so you teach each other. You need at least A2 in your target language. Consultation hours are on Thursdays at the Essen campus, and taking part can count toward the free Certificate for International Competence.

  • UDE International Office: Infotreff and consultation hours ↗

A weekly drop-in on Zoom (Tuesdays 16:30 to 17:30) for general questions, a Moodle course for incoming students and consultation hours on study finance and residence permits.

  • DEISA, the Indian students' association ↗

Student-run since 2019, with orientation days, festivals and a WhatsApp accommodation group. Open to any student who wants the community.

  • CampusFM ↗

UDE's student radio, at 105.6 MHz in Essen and 104.5 in Duisburg. You can join the team; the station won the 2026 Audiopreis of the Landesanstalt für Medien NRW.

  • Student music groups ↗

Universitätschor Essen, Essener Studentenorchester, Universitätsorchester Duisburg-Essen, Salto Chorale and Nefes all look for new members through the year.

  • ESG and CampusSegen (the Protestant and Catholic student communities) ↗

Both offer community, events and counselling at UDE. UDE lists them with its leisure pages.

  • Muslim and other student associations ↗

UDE's association list names the Islamic Students' Association (ISB, Essen), the Islamic Students' Association Duisburg (ISV), Alevi, Turkish, Kurdish and Pakistani student groups and the Christian student group SMD.

Campus life and study culture

UDE is a two-city university, and your daily life depends on which campus your programme uses. The Essen campus sits at Universitätsstraße 2, and the student centre Die Brücke is on it. The AStA has its Essen office there, the Hochschulsport keeps a campus desk there, and the Protestant student community has held services there. Ask your faculty which campus your lectures use before you sign a lease, because Duisburg is a different city.

Beyond lectures, the useful bits are small ones. The AStA gives free legal and social advice (useful the first time a landlord sends you a bill you do not understand), lends laptops and bikes, and sells the KulturTicket. ISAAC meets for an international Stammtisch twice a month. The language tandem pairs you with a native speaker. UDE also runs a weekly Zoom drop-in for new international students on Tuesday afternoons and a Moodle course for incoming students with the essentials.

If you play or sing, UDE has a university choir, a student orchestra and the Duisburg-Essen university orchestra, and the campus radio CampusFM broadcasts on 105.6 MHz in Essen. Folkwang students have their own world: an arts university with its own student committee, study advice that covers international students' situations, and its own canteen and bistro.

The Studierendenwerk offers over 2,000 hall places across Essen and Duisburg, for a student body of about 38,000 at UDE alone plus Folkwang and Hochschule Ruhr West. Apply online as early as you can and look for a WG in parallel. Housing office: wohnen@stw-edu.de, +49 201 82010 777, Reckhammerweg 1, 45141 Essen.

Food, canteens and support

On the Essen campus the Studierendenwerk runs the Mensa Campus Essen and two cafeterias, the Gelbe Cafete and the Rote Cafete. There are also canteens at the university hospital and at the Folkwang campus. Daily menus, allergen information and payment options are on the Studierendenwerk site, with separate payment pages for students and for staff and guests.

The same office does more than food. It gives BAföG guidance, social counselling (including study financing and support for international students), psychological counselling for study stress and crises, and a job portal for student work. If money gets tight or you feel lost in the first semester, those are the doors to knock on, and they cost nothing.

Sport and nights out

Hochschulsport UDE offers around 300 courses in more than 100 sports, booked online through buchsys.de at reduced student fees. The Essen office and the USC Campus Essen gym are at Schützenbahn 70. Outside the university, the Baldeneysee and the Ruhr valley are the places for running and cycling, and Rot-Weiss Essen play at the Stadion an der Hafenstraße.

For evenings, UDE's own first-semester guide names Rüttenscheid as the main nightlife district, a stretch of cafes and bars around Rüttenscheider Straße. The same guide lists clubs including Café Nord, Delta Musik Park, Essence, Goethebunker, Lucy, Musikpalette, Pearl Nightclub, Studio Essen, Temple Bar, Turock and Westend Club. For cinema it names the Lichtburg, Galerie Cinema and Filmstudio Glückauf, and for theatre the Aalto-Musiktheater, the Philharmonie Essen and the Schauspiel Essen. Venues change, so look for current opening nights before you head out.

UDE charges a semester contribution, not tuition fees.

Your first weeks, in order

  1. 1

    Before you arrive

Apply to the Studierendenwerk for a room as early as you can; the application is online. Keep a copy of the landlord's signed confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbescheinigung) for the next step. If you need a visa, the blocked account is a visa document: 11,904 EUR for one year, paid out at 992 EUR a month.

  2. 2

    Within 14 days of arriving

Register your address. For non-EU students in Essen, UDE says appointments are made by phone with the Ausländerbehörde Essen, on +49 201 88 3 888 3. Bring your passport, the landlord's confirmation and your enrolment certificate. You then receive a registration certificate, and a tax ID follows by post.

  3. 3

    Soon after

Book your residence permit appointment. The immigration office decides the timing, so book as soon as you can and keep your visa dates in view. UDE's international office has consultation hours on residence permits and study finance.

  4. 4

    Health insurance

Health insurance is required for studying in Germany; IBZ's student-ID route asks for proof of it. Ask UDE's international office which insurers it accepts and keep the proof with your documents.

  5. 5

    First month

Pay the semester contribution, collect your student ID and set up the digital semester ticket in the myUDE app. Open a normal bank account. Go to ISAAC's Stammtisch and your national student group's welcome events.

Part-time jobs and the work rules

On a student residence permit you may work up to 140 full days a year, and a day of up to four hours counts as a half day, so 280 half days is the same allowance. Work as a student assistant at the university is not counted against it. Keep your own log, because going over the limit can cost you your permit.

The Studierendenwerk runs a job portal for students, and the AStA's social counselling can look at a contract before you sign. Essen is also home to many large employers, listed in the city section, which matters later for internships and graduate jobs.
