The Sri Kamadchi Ampal temple in Hamm-Uentrop: a tall gateway tower covered in coloured figures, with red and white striped walls and a paved forecourt

Studying in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany

Hamm

A calm Westphalian city on the Lippe, with Europe's largest Tamil Hindu temple, cheap rooms and the whole Ruhr area on one train line.

Hamm is an independent city of about 179,000 people at the eastern edge of the Ruhr area, where the Lippe river runs through town from east to west. It is not a student metropolis, and that is the point: the public Hochschule Hamm-Lippstadt has its Hamm campus on Marker Allee, about five minutes on foot from the town centre, so you can walk to shops, restaurants and a cinema. Dortmund is about 30 km to the south-west and Münster about 34 km to the north, and both are one regional train away. Rooms in shared flats cost roughly 290 to 500 euros a month, there is no tuition fee, and the semester fee includes a Deutschland-Ticket. The city also has a surprise for anyone from South Asia: the Sri Kamadchi Ampal temple in Uentrop, built by Tamil families who fled Sri Lanka, is the biggest Hindu temple on the European continent.

Living in Hamm

A railway town that rebuilt itself around parks and water

Count Adolf I of the Mark founded Hamm as a planned town on 4 March 1226. It joined the Hanseatic League in the 15th century, and from 1657 to 1781 it even had a small academy, the Gymnasium Illustre, which is the ancestor of today's Gymnasium Hammonense. A fire in 1741 destroyed the Gothic town hall and 346 houses, so the old centre is not a postcard medieval one.

What made modern Hamm was the railway, which arrived in 1847, followed by coal mines and wire works. The marshalling yard grew into one of the largest in Europe, at 110 hectares, and the Zeche Radbod mine disaster of 1908 killed 348 miners. Hamm was heavily bombed in the Second World War. The last mine, Bergwerk Ost, closed in 2010, and the city now lives from logistics, energy, chemicals, car suppliers and public institutions.

You can still see that past in the landscape, but it has been turned into green space. The Maximilianpark sits on a former colliery, the Lippe has been given back its meadows, and the Datteln-Hamm Canal brings cargo barges right to the edge of town. Expect a practical, quiet city where people say hello on the bus. Hamm does not promise a big nightlife, and it does not pretend to.

What to see and do

Most of this is within a bus or bike ride of the campus.

  • Maximilianpark and the Glaselefant ↗

A leisure park at Alter Grenzweg 2, laid out on the former Zeche Maximilian for the 1984 state garden show. Its landmark is the Glaselefant, a glass elephant built into a former coal-washing building. The park hosts events, including the Herbstleuchten light show every autumn (9 October to 1 November in 2026) and a Musik & Comedy series.

  • Sri Kamadchi Ampal temple ↗

In Uentrop, opened in 2002. Visitors are welcome; the city's leaflet lists daily opening hours of 8:00 to 14:00 and 17:00 to 20:00, with services at 8:00, 12:00 and 18:00. You take off your shoes, and meat, alcohol and smoking are not allowed on the site. The temple festival falls between late May and early July and draws thousands of guests.

  • Gustav-Lübcke-Museum ↗

The city museum at Neue Bahnhofstraße 9, open Tuesday to Saturday 10:00 to 17:00 and Sunday 10:00 to 18:00. It has an ancient Egyptian collection, and the current special exhibition (until 21 February 2027) is George Grosz x Daniel Richter.

  • Kurpark and the Lippe meadows ↗

Bad Hamm has a Kurhaus and a Kurpark with ponds, which hosts events in summer. The Lippe runs for almost 32 km through the city, and its renaturalised meadows are good for a Sunday walk or run.

  • Schloss Heessen ↗

A brick castle in the district of Heessen, next to the Lippe meadows. The Waldbühne Heessen open-air theatre is in the same district.

  • Cycling routes ↗

The city lists the 32 km PANORAMA-ROUTE through Hamm, the 71 km Elefantenrunde that starts and ends in Hamm, the 125 km WerseRadweg to the Münsterland and the 295 km Römer-Lippe-Route from Detmold to Xanten, which follows the Lippe.

  • Maximare and the Kurhaus ↗

Maximare is the thermal bath and swimming centre; HSHL students and staff get a discounted ticket for the 50 m pool (1.90 EUR for 90 minutes). The Kurhaus in Bad Hamm hosts events.

Nature and weekends

Hamm covers 226 square kilometres, and its height only varies between about 38 and 100 metres, so cycling is easy. The SRH guide to the city suggests water skiing at the Haarener See, a climbing park, canoeing on the Lippe canal and day trips to the Möhnesee, the Beckumer See and the marina at Rünthe in Bergkamen.

For city weekends you do not need a plan: Dortmund is one of the Ruhr area's biggest cities, Münster is a university city of its own, and Bielefeld and Paderborn lie to the east. The same guide notes that Ahlen, Unna, Kamen and Soest are all under 30 minutes away by train, which is handy for flat hunting and cheap day trips.

The front of Hamm central station: a red and white classical building with tall arched windows and a clock under the roof
Hamm Hauptbahnhof, the junction that connects the city to the whole Ruhr area.

Getting around, and getting out

Hamm Hauptbahnhof is a major junction with twelve platform tracks. ICE trains run to Berlin via Bielefeld and Hannover, and onward to Dortmund, Essen, Duisburg and Düsseldorf or to Hagen, Wuppertal and Köln. Regional express lines include RE 1 (Aachen, Köln, Düsseldorf, Essen, Dortmund, Hamm), RE 6 (Köln/Bonn airport, Düsseldorf, Dortmund, Hamm, Bielefeld, Minden), RE 7 (Münster, Hamm, Unna, Hagen, Wuppertal, Köln) and RE 11 (Paderborn, Soest, Hamm, Dortmund, Essen, Düsseldorf), all listed as hourly.

Your semester fee includes the Deutschland-Ticket, issued as a QR code through the RIDE platform from winter 2026/27. It covers local and regional transport nationwide, so a trip to Düsseldorf for the consulate costs nothing extra on a regional train. Bus lines 6, 18 and 33 stop at the Hochschule Hamm-Lippstadt on Marker Allee, and the campus is a five-minute walk from the town centre. Köln/Bonn airport is on the RE 6 line, which runs through Dortmund to Hamm.

Where the work is

None of this is a promise of a job, but it shows where an internship or a student job can come from.

  • Logistics and the canal harbour ↗

The Stadthafen is one of Germany's largest public canal ports, and Hamm's station is a freight and passenger junction. Logistics is the field the city is best known for.

  • Energy and chemicals ↗

Chemicals, energy and car suppliers replaced coal and wire-making as the main industries. Stadtwerke Hamm is the local utility.

  • Oberlandesgericht Hamm ↗

The Higher Regional Court is one of the largest in Germany, and the city also has several hospitals. Relevant if you study law, health or administration.

  • Hochschule Hamm-Lippstadt career service ↗

HSHL runs a Career Service and the Next Career programme for its students, with links to regional employers.

Campus life and study culture

The Hamm campus is a modern, compact site on the edge of town, with fields right behind it. The learning environment is built around practical work: laboratories, workshops, a media centre and a library that members with a card can also enter early in the morning and in the evening. Buildings are generally open from 8:00 to 20:00, and about 400 student workplaces are spread over the site.

HSHL programmes are applied and project-based, and the Hamm Bachelor's programmes we list include a practical semester or semester abroad in the fifth semester, which is a common way into a first job. Several Master's programmes are taught in German, so check the language line of each programme page before you apply. Student life is organised by the AStA, which splits its work between the two campuses, and by a student Discord server, so expect most contacts to be made at the start of the semester.

Housing: start early

HSHL does not provide accommodation, and a long-term search often takes several weeks. Start as soon as you are admitted. The Studierendenwerk Paderborn and a private hall opposite the campus are the first places to look.

Food, sport and evenings

The Studierendenwerk Paderborn runs the Mensa Basilica on the Hamm campus (Marker Allee 76 to 78), open Monday to Thursday 11:30 to 14:00 and Friday 11:30 to 13:30. You pay with the Delicard, which costs a 5 euro deposit and is topped up at machines in the foyer. The town centre is a five-minute walk from campus, with restaurants, shops and a cinema.

For sport, the university offers free courses, discounted swimming at Maximare, and partner gyms (aktivita and VIVA Fitness in Hamm). Beyond that, the SRH guide names the Eishalle Hamm, a bowling alley, the climbing park and the water-ski lake. Evenings are low-key: bars such as the Pirates rock bar, Anker & Herz in summer and Café Extrablatt, events in the Maximilianpark and the Kurpark, and open-air theatre in Heessen. For a big night out most students take the train to Dortmund or Münster.

Your first weeks

  1. 1

    Before you fly

Apply through uni-assist as HSHL requires, then book a room as soon as you are admitted. Open your blocked account and arrange health insurance; check the current blocked-account amount on the website of the German mission that handles your visa.

  2. 2

    First week

Register your address at the Bürgeramt within 14 days of moving in. The city's service portal (serviceportal.hamm.de) has the form and appointment booking, and the service line is 02381 17-7777. You need the registration for everything else.

  3. 3

    First two weeks

Enrol at HSHL and pay the semester fee by bank transfer, not cash. Your Deutschland-Ticket becomes available as a QR code after enrolment. Register for the International Buddy Program if you have not.

  4. 4

    First month

Book your residence permit at the Ausländerbehörde, Sachsenweg 6, 59073 Hamm, through the city's online booking portal (hamm.termine-reservieren.online). The office advises on Monday and Wednesday 8:00 to 12:00 and 14:00 to 15:30, and Friday 8:00 to 12:00; there are no consultation hours on Tuesday and Thursday. Finished permits are collected at Bockelweg 1.

  5. 5

    First semester

Join the Hochschulsport booking when it opens, look at the AStA's areas, and find your Mensa lunch routine. Check the International Office's consultation hours for questions about your visa.

Working while you study

Students from outside the EU may work 140 full days or 280 half days a year. Working more needs permission from the Agentur für Arbeit and the Ausländerbehörde, and it is granted only in cases of special financial need. Student assistant jobs at the university have no day limit, but you must still tell the Ausländerbehörde. Earnings up to 556 EUR a month in a minijob are tax-free, and the minimum wage is 13.90 EUR an hour since January 2026.

HSHL's Career Service and Next Career programme help with CVs and practical semesters.
