Studying in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany

Kaiserslautern

A technical university city at the edge of the Palatinate Forest, with research institutes on campus and a football stadium on the hill.

Kaiserslautern is a city of about 100,000 people on the north-western edge of the Pfälzerwald, the large forest that covers much of the southern Palatinate. It grew up around a medieval imperial palace and later around sewing machines and cars, and since the university opened in 1970 it has turned into a city of engineers, computer scientists and mathematicians. Two Fraunhofer institutes, the German Research Centre for Artificial Intelligence, a Max Planck institute and a Leibniz institute work next to the campus, so a student here often meets researchers in the same building as lecturers. The forest starts at the city boundary, rooms in student halls cost from about 185 euros, and the football club 1. FC Kaiserslautern plays at the Fritz-Walter-Stadion on the Betzenberg, which hosted matches at the 2006 World Cup. It is a smaller and quieter city than Frankfurt, which is about 117 km away in a straight line, and you will notice that the American military community around Ramstein is part of everyday life here.

Part 1

Living in Kaiserslautern

An emperor's town that became an engineers' town

The name goes back to a settlement called Villa Luthra, first mentioned around 830. After 1152 Emperor Frederick Barbarossa had a palace built here, which is why Kaiserslautern calls itself the Barbarossa city, and Rudolf of Habsburg granted city rights in 1276. The sandstone ruins of the palace still stand in the middle of the centre, next to the Casimir fortress. The city became Bavarian in 1816, and for the next century and a half it was an industrial town: sewing machines from Pfaff, machines and scales from local firms, and from 1966 an Opel plant.

That industrial past explains the present. When the Technical University opened in 1970 it started with mathematics, physics and technology, and the city now describes itself as a science and IT location. Around the university you find the PRE-Park for start-ups, two Fraunhofer institutes, the DFKI and a Max Planck institute for software systems. The city is not pretty in the way a medieval town is, because the centre was rebuilt after the war, but it has a Stiftskirche, a Marienkirche, more than fifty fountains and a pedestrian zone with the usual shops.

Be clear about what you are choosing. This is a mid-sized city where most students study something technical, where the forest is ten minutes from the lecture hall, and where the evenings are quieter than in Berlin or Munich. If you want a large international crowd on your doorstep, plan to use the trains.

What to see and do

Most of this is within a bus or bike ride of the campus. The Deutschland-Semesterticket covers local buses and regional trains, so the trip itself costs nothing extra.

  • Fritz-Walter-Stadion on the Betzenberg ↗

Home of 1. FC Kaiserslautern, currently in the 2. Bundesliga. The stadium holds about 49,000 for league matches and was one of the venues of the 2006 FIFA World Cup, with five matches. The club's own site lists stadium visits and the museum.

  • Pfalztheater ↗

The city theatre at Willy-Brandt-Platz 4+5 plays drama, opera, musicals and orchestral concerts. For people aged 14 to 23 it advertises a youth subscription of five evenings for 35 euros.

  • Kammgarn ↗

A former spinning mill at Schoenstraße 10 that is now the main venue for concerts, comedy and cabaret, poetry slams, film nights and dance parties.

  • The Kaiserpfalz ruins and the old town ↗

The remains of Barbarossa's palace sit right in the centre. The old-town festival in July runs between Martinsplatz and Mainzer Tor, and the Christmas market starts on the first Sunday of Advent.

  • Gartenschau and Japanese Garden ↗

The Gartenschau park, with a dinosaur exhibition, and the Japanese Garden, one of the larger ones in Europe, are both listed by the city among its parks. The AStA also lists the Japanese Garden among the services students can use.

  • Wildpark Betzenberg and Zoo ↗

The city lists a wildlife park on the Betzenberg and the Kaiserslautern zoo among its green spaces.

Forest and weekends

The south of the city lies inside the Naturpark Pfälzerwald, which is part of the Pfälzerwald-Nordvogesen biosphere reserve. Hiking trails start inside the city, and the Pfälzerwald cycle route ends here. Two castles, Burg Hohenecken and Burg Beilstein, lie in the city area, and the Humbergturm lookout tower gives you the view in the hero photo above. The Hammerwoog and the Gelterswoog are ponds in the forest around the city.

In summer the open-air pool at the Waschmühle sits between wooded hills. The city's tourism pages list a Barbarossa cycle route, a Pfälzerwald tour for bikes and the Pfälzer Waldpfad for hikers, so you do not need a car to spend a weekend outside.

For bigger-city weekends, Saarbrücken (about 60 km), Mainz (about 70 km) and Frankfurt (117 km as the crow flies) are the usual targets. Remember that the semester ticket does not cover ICE, IC or EC trains, so those need a separate ticket.

The RPTU campus sits on the hill above the city at Gottlieb-Daimler-Straße, with the research institutes beside it. It is a compact campus university, so lectures, the library, the Mensa, student halls and the sports grounds are in walking distance of each other. The Hochschule Kaiserslautern has its main site at Schoenstraße 11 in the city, with further locations in Pirmasens and Zweibrücken.

The AStA invites first-year students to a welcome event at the grill hut on the university sports grounds, and each department's Fachschaft runs its own orientation. To find your department, look at the two-digit number in the corner of your student card: the AStA lists 05 for computer science and 01 for mathematics. Tuition is free, but each semester you pay the contribution of 381.80 euros at the RPTU, and a late re-registration adds 25 euros.

The AStA also runs a summer festival at the university in June, according to the city's culture overview, and the university sports grounds are the usual place to meet outside class.

Housing

The Studierendenwerk has about 1,900 places in Kaiserslautern, Zweibrücken and Pirmasens. Applying does not mean you will get a room.

  • Halls near the RPTU ↗

    Trippstadter Str. 121 (211 places, rooms assigned by lottery), Gerhart-Hauptmann-Str. 24, Meisenweg 6-10, Gottlieb-Daimler-Str. 68 and Kurt-Schumacher-Str. 8-22.

  • Housing help for international students ↗

A page for incoming students, with the 95 euro starter package and a contact in the international office.

Food, sport and evenings

A student card with a payment chip works in all canteens.

  • Mensa and Robotic Kitchen ↗
