Studying in Saarland, Germany

Saarbrücken

A small state capital on the French border, with a computer-science campus and a degree-and-language mix you do not find elsewhere in Germany.

Saarbrücken is the capital of the Saarland and sits directly on the border with the French department of Moselle. The city has belonged to France, Prussia, the German Empire and the Saar Territory over the centuries, and the border is still part of daily life: the tram line runs across it to Sarreguemines, and the Franco-German University has its administration here. For a student the draw is concrete. Saarland University and the Saarland Informatics Campus are a serious address for computer science and cybersecurity, htw saar teaches engineering, business and architecture with many partner universities abroad, and two small arts universities cover music and fine art. Studierendenwerk halls start at 252 EUR a month, and the semester fee already includes a Deutschlandsemesterticket.

Semester contribution, Saarland University, winter 2026/27
412.30 EUR, including the Deutschlandsemesterticket (226.80 EUR)

Part 1

Living in Saarbrücken

A border city that changed hands many times

The name first appears in a document of 999 as Sarabruca, and a Roman settlement stood on the site before that. Saarbrücken and St. Johann, on the two banks of the Saar, both received town rights in 1322 and were merged with Malstatt-Burbach into one city only in 1909. Later the area belonged to France, then Prussia, the German Empire, the Saar Territory and finally the Federal Republic.

That mixed history explains why the old town looks different from what you may expect of Germany. The Ludwigskirche and the streets around it are baroque, the Alte Brücke over the Saar dates from 1546/47, and the Rathaus in St. Johann has a fountain in front of it, the Phönixbrunnen. Industry marked the city for a long time: it was the industrial and transport hub of the Saar coal-mining region, making iron and steel among other things. Today the universities and research institutes are among its best-known employers.

What to see and do

Most of this is reachable by tram or bus, and a lot of it is free.

  • Deutsch-Französischer Garten ↗

A park of about 50 hectares on the south-west edge of the city, near the border crossing at Goldene Bremm. It opened as a Franco-German garden show in 1960. It has a lake with pedal boats, a water organ, a park railway, a cable car, rose and heather gardens and an open-air stage for up to 800 people. Entry is free except for special events.

  • Saarländisches Staatstheater ↗

The state theatre, at Schillerplatz 2, shows ballet, drama, musicals and concerts of the Saarländisches Staatsorchester. The box office is open Tuesday to Friday 10:00 to 18:00 and Saturday 10:00 to 14:00; its page has a section on discounts.

  • Filmfestival Max Ophüls Preis ↗

A film festival for first to third films from Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Luxembourg. The 48th edition runs from 25 to 31 January 2027, so it falls in the middle of the winter semester.

  • Perspectives festival ↗

A festival whose site shows a save-the-date for 13 to 22 May 2027; its listings include workshops at the Plattform Studios on Schroten, some of them in German and English.

  • Völklinger Hütte (Völklingen Ironworks) ↗

A former ironworks and UNESCO World Heritage Site in Völklingen, at Rathausstraße 75 to 79. Students enter free; the normal ticket is 17 EUR.

France next door, and the Greater Region

The city borders the French department of Moselle, and French citizens are the second-largest group of foreigners in Saarbrücken after Italians. The Saarbahn light rail crosses the border to Sarreguemines. Saarbrücken belongs to the QuattroPole network of cities with Luxembourg, Metz and Trier, and ICE trains connect the main station to Paris. Saarland University's own page describes the university as sitting at the crossroads of France, Germany and Luxembourg, and the university has a Frankreichzentrum that recently marked its 30th anniversary.

The Franco-German University (Deutsch-Französische Hochschule) has its administration in Saarbrücken, at Villa Europa, Kohlweg 7. It is a network of 210 French and German universities that funds integrated degree programmes with a French and a German degree; its site counts around 6,000 enrolled students. It is not a place you enrol at, and htw saar lists Franco-German degrees through DFHI/ISFATES.

The university's international student centre also runs outings to the Le Carreau theatre in Forbach on the French side, so French is worth learning here.

Nature and weekends

The Saarland is small and green, and most of these are a day trip.

  • Saarschleife and the Cloef viewpoint ↗

The Saar bends in a tight loop near Mettlach. The Cloef viewpoint in Orscholz lies about 180 m above the river, and since 2016 a treetop walkway with an observation tower gives a wider view. Paths for hiking and cycling, including the Saar-Radweg, run along the loop.

  • Biosphärenreservat Bliesgau ↗

A UNESCO biosphere reserve in the south-east of the Saarland, recognised in 2009, of mostly woods, orchard meadows and the floodplain of the Blies. Saarbrücken lies directly to its west. 25 of Germany's 50 native orchid species grow there.

Campus life and study culture

Saarland University is a campus university: lecture halls, the library, the canteen, the AStA building, the KHG and the Welcome Center are all within a short walk, and buses from the main station stop at Universität Campus every ten minutes or so on weekdays. htw saar has its Alt-Saarbrücken campus on Goebenstraße in the city. HBKsaar and the Hochschule für Musik (Trierer Straße 2 to 4) are separate, specialised universities.

The campus is mostly German-language, but the Saarland Informatics Campus draws students from 81 countries and the degree finder lets you filter for English-taught programmes. Learn some German early either way: part-time jobs, flat viewings and the authorities all run in German. The ZiS weekly get-togethers and the buddy programme are meant for exactly the first weeks, and Wednesday lunchtime in the Mensa foyer has Spezialitätentage where a student presents their home country and the Mensa team cooks a dish from the student's recipe.

Housing

The Studierendenwerk has five halls in Saarbrücken (the four named here plus the WOGE campus building), and rooms go by the date of your online application.

  • Studierendenwerk halls ↗

Waldhausweg 15 to 21 has 16 m² apartments with a private kitchen and bath for 355 EUR; Guckelsberg has 9 m² rooms in two-person flats for 252 to 280 EUR; Rotenbergstraße 12 has apartments for 342 to 370 EUR; Wohnheim E on the campus has 20 m² apartments for 370 EUR. Contracts run 6 or 12 months. The deposit is three net monthly rents and is refunded without interest if there is no damage.

  • WOGE and other private halls ↗

The WOGE campus hall has 21 to 23 m² apartments at 413.50 EUR for two semesters from October to September; the Kaiserslauterer Straße flat share lists single rooms at 300 to 330 EUR. Private halls take applications directly.

  • Housing Office for international students ↗

Saarland University and htw saar run a Housing Office for international students that the Studierendenwerk lists for the start of the winter semester; check the current dates on its page. Doctoral candidates cannot get a Studierendenwerk room.

Food, money and health

The Studierendenwerk runs the Mensa on the university campus, a Mensagarden, the cafés B4RISTA and Books and Beans, and canteens at htw saar (Alt-SB and Rotenbühl), the HfM and the HBK. Its page does not list meal prices, so check the day's menu on the Studierendenwerk site.

Most banks in Saarbrücken offer a Girokonto that is usually free for students. Bring your passport, the registration certificate from the Bürgeramt and your enrolment certificate. Some students cannot open an account without a residence permit; the Welcome Center advises trying another bank in that case.

Health insurance is mandatory. Non-EU students generally join a German statutory insurer at the student tariff, two of which have offices on campus. If you are over 30, ask the statutory insurers whether they can still accept you, because otherwise you will need a private policy. The Studierendenwerk's psychological counselling is free and confidential.

Your first weeks

  1. 1

    Before you travel

Open the blocked account if your visa needs one (992 EUR a month, 11,904 EUR a year) and arrange health insurance. Apply for a dorm room as early as you can, because places follow the application date.

  2. 2

    First days

Book your address registration at terminvergabe.saarbruecken.de under Meldeangelegenheiten, then Wohnsitzanmeldung Zuzug aus dem Ausland. New slots appear every morning at 07:30. Bring your passport and a Wohnungsgeberbestätigung signed by your landlord. You get the Meldebescheinigung on the day.

  3. 3

    Walk-in option

On Wednesdays 07:30 to 11:30 you can walk in without an appointment and take a waiting number; waits can be long. City and Dudweiler also list student walk-in Fridays at the start of the semester. Saarbrücken has four Bürgerämter (City, Dudweiler, Halberg, Burbach) and you may use any of them.

  4. 4

    Bank and insurance

Open a Girokonto with your Meldebescheinigung and enrolment certificate, then add private liability insurance if you want it; the Studierendenwerk's own student insurance covers only certain university situations.

  5. 5

    Residence permit

The permit is handled by the Saarland's Zentrale Ausländerbehörde (LAVA), not the city. The Welcome Center says a campus service point of the authority is open at the university from 1 September 2026 for students of Saarland University who live in the Saarland. Book by email to zab-campus@lava.saarland.de six to eight weeks before your visa ends, or right after arrival if you entered visa-free. No appointment means no visit.

  6. 6

    Money to show

The university states a financial proof of at least 992 EUR per month (11,904 EUR per year), as of October 2025; a blocked account, a sponsor's declaration, a scholarship or an employment contract are accepted, and combinations are possible.

Part-time jobs and the work rules

If you come from outside the EU or EEA you may work up to 140 full days or 280 half days a calendar year without extra approval, and exceeding that needs the Ausländerbehörde's permission. A half day means work of up to four or five hours. Work as a student assistant (wissenschaftliche Hilfskraft) does not count toward the days but you must tell the Ausländerbehörde; mandatory internships do not count, voluntary ones do. Working more than 20 hours a week during the semester triggers social insurance contributions, so ask your health insurer first.

The Students@Work service of the AStA gives free advice on contracts, minijobs and taxes. The Haus des Ankommens at Betzenstraße 6 is the city's welcome centre, run with htw saar; it is aimed mainly at skilled workers arriving from abroad and gives free referrals on authorities, German courses and recognition of qualifications.

Nights out and campus nights

The ZiS-Treff moves between pubs in the city centre every second Thursday and once a month on a Sunday, and the Tuesday games evenings have billiards, table football and darts every 14 days. The AStA's MensaBar and the Forum International host the evening events on campus. In town, St. Johanner Markt is the pedestrian heart, and the Staatstheater and the Max Ophüls festival give you cheaper cultural evenings than the big cities. You can also take the tram to Sarreguemines for an evening in France.

Where you come from matters here

Pick your home country: food, faith, community groups and the consulate that serves you, checked 21 October 2026.

🇮🇳 Living in Saarbrücken as an Indian student

No Indian student association or Hindu temple is listed on the city or university pages for Saarbrücken. The consulate you will deal with is in Frankfurt, and the ZiS lets you present your own country on campus.

  • Consulate General of India, Frankfurt ↗

At Friedrich-Ebert-Anlage 26, Frankfurt. Handles passports, OCI, attestation and visa services; applications are submitted 9:30 to 12:30. Check its jurisdiction page to confirm it covers the Saarland.

  • ZiS Spezialitätentage ↗

On Wednesdays in the Mensa foyer a student presents their country and the Mensa team cooks a dish from the student's recipe; the ZiS helps with organising.
